Recently, Medplus and Dr. Brown’s partnered to support over 200 new mum’s in Makoko, Lagos, with the aim of addressing a critical issue that many mothers face after childbirth—postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), a condition characterized by heavy bleeding.
PPH can be dangerous, and in some areas, it is a leading cause of maternal mortality.
Postpartum hemorrhage is a major concern because it can occur suddenly and unexpectedly after childbirth. In communities like Makoko, where access to medical care might be limited, it becomes even more crucial to focus on preventing this condition and understanding how to manage it if it arises.
With the 2024 theme “Prioritize Comfort,” Dr. Brown’s and Medplus are committed to ensuring the well-being and comfort of new mothers.
One of the primary efforts was to educate the mothers and provide essential information on recognizing the early signs of postpartum hemorrhage. By equipping mothers with this knowledge, they can seek timely medical attention, reducing the risk of severe complications.
Central to the initiative was the distribution of critical mothercare products, such as the Nightingale Towel Underpad, Dr. Brown’s MotherSept Pad, and Dr. Brown’s Baby Wipes. These items play a vital role in postpartum care.
The Nightingale Towel Underpad helps maintain hygiene and comfort during the postpartum period and is particularly useful in monitoring blood loss, allowing for the early detection of excessive bleeding.
Dr. Brown’s MotherSept Pad, designed specifically for new mothers, provides comfort while ensuring effective absorption, making it crucial for tracking blood loss and identifying postpartum hemorrhage early. Although primarily intended for infant care, Dr. Brown’s Baby Wipes also benefit mothers by offering gentle and hygienic cleansing, which is important for overall postpartum recovery.
The initiative also included collaboration with local healthcare providers, offering training sessions for midwives and traditional birth attendants. This ensures that those assisting in childbirth are well-equipped with the latest techniques for managing postpartum hemorrhage. Additionally, the program focused on building supportive communities among new mothers, providing a space for sharing experiences and fostering an environment where maternal health is a priority.
A heartwarming moment during the event was the report of a woman who attended the program at 9 a.m. and safely delivered her baby around 3 p.m. the same day. This successful delivery highlights the importance of providing timely care and support to new mothers.
As Medplus and Dr. Brown’s continue their partnership in 2024, We remain focused on enhancing the safety and comfort of new mothers across Nigeria. The “Prioritize Comfort” theme represents a holistic approach to maternal care, ensuring that mothers are supported both physically and emotionally.
The outreach at Makoko marks the beginning of ongoing efforts to educate and empower new mothers. By continuing to address the challenges of postpartum hemorrhage and utilizing key products like the Nightingale Towel Underpad, Dr. Brown’s MotherSept Pad, and Dr. Brown’s Baby Wipes, Medplus and Dr. Brown’s are committed to reducing maternal mortality and promoting a healthier start to motherhood for women across the country.
